The program should not claim to decide which men need batterer intervention and which need “anger management”; if the man is in the program because of any degree of violence, threats, sexual assault, or chronic verbal abuse toward an intimate partner, he is not appropriate for anger management.

If non-violence programs don’t work, we think we should look for alternatives; if they do work for some men, we ought to explore how to reach more abusers.

As part of the Innovations in Batterer Intervention Project, FUTURES is developing an online publication that highlights promising approaches for working with men who batter.

Batterer Intervention Programs (BIP) are programs that batterers attend—some voluntarily, some under court order—to educate and rehabilitate the batterer. The goal of BIPs is to change offender thinking and behavior with the result that offenders are held accountable and victim safety is enhanced and to decrease the likelihood of further.

Pursuant to s. (6)(a)5, Florida Statutes, when the court orders the respondent to participate in a batterers' intervention program, the court, or any entity designated by the court, must provide the respondent with a list of batterers' intervention programs from which the respondent must choose a program in which to participate.

The Commonwealth Government has commissioned ANROWS to implement a dedicated Perpetrator Interventions Research Stream. The research stream is a priority within the Second Action Plan of the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children The purpose of this study was to examine batterer recidivism rates 5 years after community intervention and to determine differences that discriminate between recidivists and nonrecidivists.

Of the men included in the sample, 40% were identified as recidivists because they were either convicted of domestic assault, the subject of an order for protection, or a police suspect for domestic.
